Sony has officially announced the PlayStation 4. On top of that, they have also revealed the basic specifications for their next generation console. The console will be using a new CPU architecture, away from the Cell processing that the PlayStation 3 used that was too complex and confusing for developers. It also has a x86 CPU which will allow developing games between PC and PS4 much more easy and efficient. It will also come with an enhanced PC GPU which is rumoured to be form the AMD R10xx series with 2.2gb ram.

To many’s surprises, the console will come with 8gb memory, a massive amount for any console since the Wii U only had 2gb RAM and the PS3 had a total of 500mb. This is a massive step up and will prove to be very versatile in producing high caliber games. The console will also sport a local HDD like the PS3. The size of the hard drive has not been revealed yet.

Also something worth nothing, is that the console itself was not shown. The Electronics Entertainment Expo, E3, is more than likely going to be the place to reveal the console’s looks.

The Controller

The new controller for the PlayStation 4 has been revealed: the DualShock 4. Recent leaked images of the alleged controller is spot on with the controller shown at the meeting. The controller has the same style as the DualShock 3 for the PlayStation 3, as well as a visible touchpad on the front, a motion sensor light with a separate sensor bar and a share button.

The touchpad on the front is very similar to the rear touchpad of the PlayStation Vita and could hosts for a variety of uses in game. The motion sensor light is towards the back of the controller and is a blue light. The sensors are detected by a separate sensor which looks like a kinect.

The separate bar has a camera inside tracking the movements of the controller precisely. One of the more unique and pushed aspect of the controller, is the Share button. The share button does what it sounds like, allowing players to share various pieces of information, videos, photos and their statuses with the push of just one button.

One super important and brand new feature for both the controller and console is the ability to put the console in a ‘sleep’ state. Cold botting consoles takes some time but the PS4 will allow the console to wake up in a very fast and responsive time, all from the press of a button. The console will be in a saved state and store all its information in RAM. The button is found on the controller and is a innovative idea for consoles.
