The New Interface

With the new console, Sony has developed a new user interface for the PlayStation 4. At a glance, the interface looks very similar to the current Xbox 360 interface and has a similarity with Microsoft’s Windows 8 design. The new User Interface will have a more social focus, aiming at bringing a large community to gaming. The interface, as it stands form the images, shows all the needed social elements of the system; friends that own this game, media that has been shared with the game, news about the game and other social aspects. Although it was only shown for a short time, the new user interface looks good and could have some functionality with the touchpad.

The PS4 will also feature in-game recording as well as streaming straight form the console. As seen above, players can join a channel and watch other players play a game, something that has been popular over the past few years. E-Spots, competitive professional gaming, will be a big name on the PS4 with this technology. Also, players will be able to share videos, screenshots and status updates view the interface and the share button on the controller.

Gaikai & Cloud Streaming

After the acquisition by Sony last year, video gaming streaming service Gaikai has revealed that they will be working with the PlayStation 4 to bring new methods of gaming and connectivity to consoles. Some of the noted details of Gaikai include: an improved remote play system between the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation consoles, fast streaming of video games to consoles and the ability to browse a large library of video games and testing the games for free without any downloads or demo restrictions. This also allows games and demos to be played whilst it is still downloading, so you can skip the waiting period of downloading the game.

While Remote Play is already a feature on the PS3, it is not properly utilised and has some issues, so this new system will diversify available games as well as having a better connection.

Gaikai would be a big revolutionary change to the console market. Along with streaming video games, the new cloud gaming will allow gamers to purchase any games from Sony’s previous consoles to play on their PS4. This means any game, from the large collection, from the past can be played on the PS4, including games from the PlayStation 3. While this sounds amazing, it does come at a cost. This means that the PlayStation 4 will not have any backwards compatibility with the PS3.
