PlayStation 4 Revealed; The Technology

The Sony PlayStation 4 has been officially announced! We will be covering all the new and exciting information from the PlayStation Meeting 2013 about the brand new console!

What’s the point of having a new console with power components when there isn’t anything to utilise and push those components to its limits? Well, at the meeting, Square Enix, Capcom and Epic Games have revealed their new game engines for the PS4.

Unreal Engine is one of the most used game engines throughout the seventh generation of consoles. Epic Games has revealed Unreal Engine 4 last year, and is present at the PlayStation meeting running on the PlayStation 4 in real time. The demonstration of Unreal Engine 4 running in real time, shows what developers would be capable of using the PlayStation 4. Some of the feature highlighter in Unreal Engine 4 running on the PS4 include dynamic lighting and shadowing, real-time reflections, subsurface scattering and GPU-powered particle effects.

Square Enix’s Yoshihisha Hashimoto appeared at the meeting to show their new game engine running in real time on the PlayStation 4. The Luminous Engine is Square Enix’s next engine for next generation consoles, succeeding Crystal Tools used in Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2. Though something did seem amiss, since the Luminous demonstration was also seen last year at E3. Both had the same footage but the one showed at the meeting was running on the PS4 in real time, whereas the E3 video was pre-rendered.
