Charizard & Greninja Announced for Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U + Release Date

Two new challengers approach the next instalment in Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii U. Two new Pokemon are making their debut appearances as playable characters (technically only one), a classic and a recent addition: Charizard and Greninja! Featuring a CGI intro and gameplay, get ready to fire it up and make a splash with these new characters.

Nintendo have also revealed three returning characters for the games: Yoshi, Sheik and Zero Suit Samus. All of this was revealed that the recent Nintendo Direct, which was solely focused on Super Smash Bros.

Additionally, Nintendo of America has announced via Twitter a release window for the games: the 3DS version will hit North America in Summer this year, while the Wii U version will arrive in Winter. 

Super Smash Bros. is a video game crossover series that mainly features Nintendo characters. The first game in the series released on the Nintendo 64 in 1999. The fighting game featured 12 playable characters from Nintendo’s most prolific franchises. From F-Zero‘s Captain Falcon to EarthBound‘s Ness, the game was a party game aimed to be played with friends. The second game in the series, Super Smash Bros. Melee released in 2001 for the Nintendo GameCube. This instalment featured 25 playable characters, and received critical acclaim. The latest instalment was Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii. The game released in 2008 and featured 35 characters, and was the first to feature characters (Sonic and Solid Snake) from non Nintendo titles. To date the series has sold over 20 million copies.

The new Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U will be coming out on the titular handheld and console. More characters are expected to be revealed as we approach Summer and Winter, the respective release dates for the games. Additional gameplay will be revealed for E3.
