Haikyuu!! Season 2 Will Be 25 Episodes Long

The official website of the anime adaptation of Haruichi Furudate’s Haikyuu!! manga has revealed the first details about the Blu-ray and DVD releases of the anime’s second season, which announced that the anime will have a total of 25 episodes.

The anime’s website has revealed that there will be a total of 9 Blu-ray and DVD volumes for the second season of Haikyuu!! The first 7 volumes will contain 3 episodes each, with the remaining two volumes containing 2 episodes each. This equates to a total of 25 episodes, where episodes 24 and 25 will release in the 9th and final volume. The anime is a 2 cour series airing over two consecutive seasons where it would be scheduled to end in March next year.

The first volume will release on January 20, 2016 and will contain episodes 1, 2 and 3. The first volume will also contain the following extras:

  • A special case drawn by character designer Kishida Takahiro
  • A special Audio drama CD
  • Video footage of the August Haikyuu!! event
  • A special video that was shown exclusively at the event
  • Non credited versions of the Opening and Ending sequences
  • A part of the anime’s OST
  • A 16 page booklet

Pre-orders for the first volume, and all 9 volumes, are currently available. There are special bonuses if you do order from specific stores. Further details about the bonuses will be revealed at a later date.

The second season of Haikyuu!! began on Sunday, October 4th at 2:58am JST on MBS. The anime also aired on CBC during the same time slot, and aired on Tokyo MX on the midnight of Monday/Tuesday, October 5th/6th.

Haikyuu!! is a volleyball sports manga written and illustrated by Haruichi Furudate. The Haikyuu!! debuted as a one shot manga that was released in Winter 2011 in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump Next! magazine and another one shot in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. After that one shot the manga became a weekly series in the same magazine where to date a total of 13 compiled volumes have been released, with the 14th volume releasing on the 27th. A crossover chapter with Naoshi Komi’s Nisekoi manga was produced in July last year. An anime adaptation of Haikyuu!! was produced this August in the Summer 2014 anime season that ran for a total of 26 episodes. The series was directed by Susumu Mitsunaka (Cuticle Tantei Inaba) and produced by Production I.G (Ghost in the ShellKuroko’s Basketball). A second season of the anime was earlier revealed alongside the announcement of two anime films based on the first season.

Here is a synopsis from MAL:

A chance event triggered Shouyou Hinata’s love for volleyball. His club had no members, but somehow persevered and finally made it into its very first and final regular match of middle school, where it was steamrolled by Tobio Kageyama, a superstar player known as “King of the Court.” Vowing revenge, Hinata applied to the Karasuno High School volleyball club… only to come face-to-face with his hated rival, Kageyama!

A tale of hot-blooded youth and volleyball from the pen of Haruichi Furudate!!

The second season of the Haikyuu!! anime currently airs on Sundays on MBS at 2:58am JST, during the Fall/Autumn 2015 anime season. The anime will air over two seasons for a total of 25 episodes. The first Blu-ray and DVD volume will release in Japan on January 20, next year.
