Valkyria Chronicles Remaster & Sequel Announced for PlayStation 4

The latest issue of Famitsu magazine is revealing two new games in the Valkyria Chronicles which will making its way to Sony’s PlayStation 4, a remaster of the original Valkyria Chronicles and a new sequel: Valkyria: Azure Revolution.

A remaster of Sega’s PlayStation 3 tactical RPG is coming out for the PlayStation 4 in Japan on February 10, retailing for ¥4,990 (~ US$40.60). The game will offer full HD graphics along with all the DLC that was released with the game back in 2008. It will also include full Trophy support and a demo for the upcoming fourth title in the main series, Valkyria: Azure Revolution.

The game’s official website has revealed some screenshots for the game:

Valkyria: Azure Revolution, the next major instalment in the series, will return to home consoles following Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3‘s release for the PlayStation Portable. The game will be developed by Media Vision, who developed Valkyria Chronicles 3, the Wild Arms series and the Chaos Rings series, and Takeshi Ozawa will be back on board as director. The game is currently scheduled to release in Japan in Winter 2016.

In the game’s debut article on Famitsu, the staff of the game revealed that it will be using a new engine called Gouache, in which the game’s visual is similar to a painting with vivid colours. The combat system has been changed into the new LeGION Battle System, boasting real time combat with additional simulated events. The game will also focus more on the RPG elements of the series.

With the discovery of the azure mineral Ragnite, the powerful Rus Empire achieved rapid industrial development and expanded its territory. Jutland, a small country, is economically blockaded by the large country, and advocating “independence and freedom from colonial rule,” strikes the empire army’s base.

The main characters of the game include:

  • Amleth, the commander of Jutland’s Anti-Valkyria Unit

Valkyria Chronicles is a tactical JRPG series developed and produced by Sega. The first game in the series released on the PlayStation 3 in 2008. The game is set in a World War II Europe setting where the player is a citizen of Gallia, a small country that is caught in the crossfire of the war between two large empires. You play as a squad of soldiers in the Gallia military who also discover a legendary race with supernatural powers, Valkyrians. The game has inspired two sequels on the PlayStation Portable. It also inspired multiple manga adaptations and even an anime adaptation in 2009. The series itself was produced by A-1 Pictures (Aldnoah.Zero, Sword Art Online) and directed by Yasutaka Yamamoto (Shinryaku!? Ika Musume, Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo?).

The next Valkyria Chronicles game, Valkyria: Azure Revolution, will be out in Japan in Winter 2016. The PlayStation 4 remaster of Valkyria Chronicles will be out in Japan on February 10, and will come with a demo for Azure Revolution.
