Japanese credit and market research company Teikoku Databank released a statement announcing that animation studio Artland (The Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Macross) is closing down as of June 30, and would be hiring a lawyer to handle things since closure. The cited reason for the closure was that the studio was in significant debt of ¥298 Million (~ US$2.61 Million).

The studio had an annual income of ¥260 Million (~ US$2.28 Million) in 2013, but during the financial year for 2016 the studio’s income was reduced to only ¥21 Million (~ US$180,000). In June 2016, Chinese-Japanese film studio Emon Animation Company made an investment into Artlan, purchasing 51% of stock in the studio. Despite this Artland were unable to recoup their losses, with over 90% of production costs being outsourced work.

Artland was founded in 1978 by anime director Noboru Ishiguro (The Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Macross), who passed away in 2012. Since their inception, the studio has produced over 30 anime, as well as working on countless other anime doing outsourcing work. The studio’s most notable series were in the 1980s with the critically impactful sci-fi titles Super Dimension Fortress Macross and The Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu).

The studio has also worked on:

  • Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
  • Mushishi
  • Tantei Opera Milky Holmes
  • Mawaru Penguindrum
  • Gungrave

The studio’s most recent series is the Sin: Nanatsu no Taizai (Seven Mortal Sins) anime, which is currently airing every Saturday at midnight, effectively Sunday. The series is set to run for 12 episodes, and no delays have been announced. The final episode is set to broadcast on July 29th.
