There has been a lot of surprises at the PlayStation Meeting 2013 but the most anticipated was the reveal of Sony’s next home console, the PlayStation 4. The meeting included a lineup of new software as well as some of the features of the PS4 itself. There were many key people in the gaming industry present and some new surprises from Blizzard and Bungie.

The PlayStation 4 itself was not revealed and any mention or image of the hardware was not seen at all. There has been some outrage over not showing the console, but it will most likely be revealed at E3 along with possibly some playable demos and games.

Here is a much closer look at the DualShock4 controller and there are some striking differences. The share button is in the upper left near the D-pad, which is modeled after the Vita’s, and to the right is the Options button. What happened to the famous Start and Select button? With their omission, it does seem odd and also the placement of the options and share buttons seem odd. The analogue sticks seem to be more solid and smaller than the DualShock 3’s and the trigger buttons has support. The touchpad doesn’t seem overly large but seems odd nonetheless.

The console will also offer a suspend state which will suspend the console in a save state, store in the system’s RAM, and essentially turn off. The player can then resume the state immediately without any long delay back into the exact state it was suspended in. Think of it as a sleep mode. It will also feature background downloading, allowing simultaneous downloading and online gaming. Also, the use of Gaikai will be revolutionary allowing gamers to try games without downloading them, instead instantly streaming games without delay. Though, not everyone will benefit this since a stable connection its required.

That is all the important aspects of the PlayStation reveal at the PlayStation Meeting 2013. Do expect more information about the console to rise within the next year.

The PlayStation 4 console is set to release in the Holiday season of 2013. It will also ship with a Mono Headset for cross-game chat and other social features.

Your move, Microsoft.
