Kizumonogatari Anime to Be Three Films – First Releases January 8

Following the countdown on the official website of the anime adaptation of Nisio Isin and Vofan’s Kizumonogatari entry in the Monogatari light novel series, the site has announced that the anime will be adapted into three anime films. The first film, will release in Japan on January 8 next year. The first visual has also been revealed.

There will be three anime films for Kizumonogatari. The first film will be titled Kizumonogatari I Tekketsu-hen (Kizumonogatari I: Blood and Iron) and will release in Japan on January 8 in Toho Theatres across the nation. The second film will be titled Kizumonogatari II Nekketsu-hen (Kizumonogatari II: Passionate Blood) with the third and final movie being Kizumonogatari III Reiketsu-hen (Kizumonogatari III: Cold Blood). The release date of the two other films have yet to be revealed.

Advance tickets for the first film will go on sale from October 9. The advance ticket will go on sale for ¥1,300 (~ US$10.80) and early buyers will have a chance to receive a clear file until stock runs out.

The site has also revealed the main cast of the anime films:

  • Hiroshi Kamiya (Izaya Orihara from Durarara!!) returns to voice Koyomi Araragi
  • Maaya Sakamoto (Motoko Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell) voices Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade
  • Yui Horie (Naru Narusegawa in Love Hina) as Tsubasa Hanekawa
  • Takahiro Sakurai (Shougo Makishima in Psycho-Pass) is voicing Meme Oshino

The production staff of the Monogatari anime adaptations will also return to produce the movies:

  • Chief Director: Akiyuki Simbo (Bakemonogatari, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica)
  • Director: Tatsuya Oishi (Bakemonogatari, MoonPhase Episode Director)
  • Anime Character Designers: Akio Watanabe (BakemonogatariThe World God Only Knows) and Hideyuki Morioka (D.Gray-man, Maria Holic)
  • Sound Director: Yota Tsuruoka (Bakemonogatari, Free!)
  • Music Composer: Satoru Kousaki (Bakemonogatari, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya)
  • Animation Studio: Shaft (Bakemonogatari, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica)

Kizumonogatari itself is the third novel in the series set before Bakemonogatari and features the story arc Koyomi Vamp. Here is the synopsis for Kizumonogatari:

“I think it’s about time I talked about Kiss-Shot-Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade. I believe it’s something I have to do. I met her in the spring break between my second and third years of high school. That meeting had such impact and was also quite devastating.”

The Monogatari series is a collection of light novels, created by Nisio Isin and illustrated by Vofan. The novels started in late 2005 and published under Kodansha’s Box imprint, where there has been a total of 16 volumes to date. The 17th volume will release on April 3rd, and the 18th and final volume releasing later this year. The light novels first received an anime adaptation titled Bakemonogatari, after the first volume, in 2009 from the animation studio Shaft (NisekoiMahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica). Since then a total of 12 novels has been animated by the same studio. The most recent adaptation, Tsukimonogatari, aired on New Years In addition, a drama CD, a PlayStation Portable game and many figures and figurines have been made based on the series. The final book of the Monogatari series, Zokuowarimonogatari, released on September 17th last year.

Here is a synopsis of the first series:

Koyomi Araragi, a third year high school student who is almost human again after briefly becoming a vampire. One day, a classmate named Hitagi Senjōgahara, who infamously never talks to anyone, falls down the stairs into Koyomi’s arms. He discovers that Hitagi weighs next to nothing, in defiance of physics. Despite being threatened by her, Koyomi offers his help, and introduces her to Meme Oshino, a middle-aged homeless man who helped him stop being a vampire.

There will be three films for the Kizumonogatari anime. The first film, Kizumonogatari I Tekketsu-hen, will release in Japan on January 8 next year, with advance tickets being on sale from October 9th. An anime adaptation of Owarimonogatari will begin this weekend.
