Kizumonogatari VR Announced for PlayStation VR

Japanese developer Kayac have announced in conjunction with Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia and Aniplex a brand new virtual reality title for PlayStation VR. It will be based on the recent anime adaptation of Nisio Isin and Vofan’s Kizumonogatari entry in the Monogatari light novel series, Kizumonogatari VR.

Kizumonogatari VR will be more of an experience than a game to celebrate the 3rd film’s release on Blu-ray and DVD. The VR experience will feature scenes from the movies as you look back fondly on Kizumonogatari in new ways only possible in VR with none other than Shinobu Oshino, Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade.

The VR experience will be playable in its full glory at an upcoming event that will take place on May 20. You will need to apply for an invitation to the event, which closes at 11:59pm JST on May 12th.

There will be three anime films for Kizumonogatari. The first film will be titled Kizumonogatari I Tekketsu-hen (Kizumonogatari I: Blood and Iron) released in Japan on January 8 in Toho Theatres across the nation. The second film, titled Kizumonogatari II Nekketsu-hen (Kizumonogatari II: Passionate Blood), released in Japan on August 19. The third film,  Kizumonogatari III: Reiketsu-hen (Kizumonogatari III: Cold Blood) released on January 6, 2017.

Kizumonogatari itself is the third novel in the series set before Bakemonogatari and features the story arc Koyomi Vamp. Here is the synopsis for Kizumonogatari:

“I think it’s about time I talked about Kiss-Shot-Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade. I believe it’s something I have to do. I met her in the spring break between my second and third years of high school. That meeting had such impact and was also quite devastating.”

The Monogatari series is a collection of light novels, created by Nisio Isin and illustrated by Vofan. The novels started in late 2005 and published under Kodansha’s Box imprint, where there has been a total of 16 volumes to date. The 17th volume will release on April 3rd, and the 18th and final volume releasing later this year. The light novels first received an anime adaptation titled Bakemonogatari, after the first volume, in 2009 from the animation studio Shaft (NisekoiMahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica). Since then a total of 12 novels has been animated by the same studio. The most recent adaptation, Tsukimonogatari, aired on New Years In addition, a drama CD, a PlayStation Portable game and many figures and figurines have been made based on the series. The final book of the Monogatari series, Zokuowarimonogatari, released on September 17th last year.

Here is a synopsis of the first series:

Koyomi Araragi, a third year high school student who is almost human again after briefly becoming a vampire. One day, a classmate named Hitagi Senjōgahara, who infamously never talks to anyone, falls down the stairs into Koyomi’s arms. He discovers that Hitagi weighs next to nothing, in defiance of physics. Despite being threatened by her, Koyomi offers his help, and introduces her to Meme Oshino, a middle-aged homeless man who helped him stop being a vampire.

The Kizumonogatari VR experience is begin held at a private event on May 20. To be invited you will need to apply before May 12th at 11:59pm JST. The experience will have you with Shinobu, taking a look back at the memories from the anime film trilogy.
