After years of silence, the official website of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise has revealed the first visual for the upcoming 4th and final Evangelion Rebuild Film. No other details for the film has been released.

Another visual was also released, which is a more refined shot of the main visual’s bottom half:

The final film was earlier announced to be releasing in 2015 after the he airing of Evangelion: 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo on Japanese Television, where it also revealed the film’s title, Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0. The movie was then given a late 2015 release date before no further news were provided, and with director Hideaki Anno busy with the Shin Godzilla movie production halted. The film was originally announced in November 2012 with the title Shin Evangerion Gekijoban:|| with an expected release of 2013.

Japanese pop singer Hikaru Utada announced in a late 2014 issue of Bungeishunjuu’s Weekly Bunshun that she would return to perform the main theme song of the final Evangelion film.

The Rebuild of Evangelion series is a reboot film series of the original 1995 Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series. Hideaki Anno, the original director of Neon Genesis Evangelion, returns as the writer and general and chief director of the films. The films are produced by Studio Khara instead of Studio Gainax, who produced the original series, and directed by Mahiro Maeda (Gankutsuou) and Kazuya Tsurumaki (FLCL). The first film in the series is Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone and released in 2007, the second film titled Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance released in 2009 and the third film, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, released in 2012. The films released two years later internationally after the Japanese release on home media under Evangelion 1.11Evangelion 2.22 and Evangelion 3.33 respectively.

Here is a synopsis of the original series from MAL:

In the year 2015, the Angels, huge, tremendously powerful, alien war machines, appear in Tokyo for the second time. The only hope for Mankind’s survival lies in the Evangelion, a humanoid fighting machine developed by NERV, a special United Nations agency. Capable of withstanding anything the Angels can dish out, the Evangelion’s one drawback lies in the limited number of people able to pilot them. Only a handful of teenagers, all born fourteen years ago, nine months after the Angels first appeared, are able to interface with the Evangelion. One such teenager is Shinji Ikari, whose father heads the NERV team that developed and maintains the Evangelion. Thrust into a maelstrom of battle and events that he does not understand, Shinji is forced to plumb the depths of his own inner resources for the courage and strength to not only fight, but to survive, or risk losing everything.
