4 Anime Films Submitted for Oscars, including Makoto Shinkai’s Tenki No Ko

The Academy Awards, commonly known as the Oscars, have released the list of submitted films for Animated Feature. A total of 32 films have been submitted for the 92nd Academy Awards, 4 of which are anime films. One of the submitted anime films is Makoto Shinkai’s Tenki no Ko (Weathering With You).

Tenki no Ko is one of three anime films submitted to the Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature. The film itself had a limited run in L.A. from October 18th as part of the submission for the awards. North American publisher GKids is handling the film’s submission process.

The other three anime films include:

In order for an animated film to be eligible for an Oscar nomination, films must be screened in Los Angeles County within the 2019 Calendar year for at least 7 days. Only 5 films will be selected to be official nominations for Best Animated Feature for the 92nd Academy Awards.

Shinkai’s prior film Kimi no Na wa. was also submitted for an Academy Award nomination at the 89th Oscars, but did not make the final 5 nominations.

Only one Japanese film won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, 2002’s Spirited Away from Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro) and Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro).

Nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards will be announced on Monday, January 13, 2020. The awards will be held on February 9, 2020.
