No Anime Films Nominated for Best Animated Feature at 2020 Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the full list of official nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards (Oscars). Unfortunately, none of the 4 anime films that were submitted made the official nomination list for Best Animated Feature Film.

Tenki no Ko (Weathering with You)

Directed by Makoto Shinkai (Kimi no Na wa., 5 Centimeters per Second) and produced by CoMix Wave Inc. (Children Who Chase Lost Voices, Kimi no Na wa.)

 

Kaijuu no Kodomo (Children of the Sea)

Directed by Ayumu Watanabe (Doraemon, Koi wa Ameagari no You ni) and produced by Studio 4°C (Tweeny Witches, Harmony)

 

Wakaokami wa Shougakusei! (Okka’s Inn)

Directed by Kitarou Kousaka (Clover, Nasu – Andalusia no Natsu) and produced by Madhouse (No Game No Life, One Punch-Man)

 

Promare

Directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill) and produced by Trigger (Little Witch Academia, Kill la Kill)

The official nominations for Animated Feature Film for the 2020 Oscars are:

  • How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
  • I Lost My Body
  • Klaus
  • Missing Link
  • Toy Story 4

Shinkai’s prior film Kimi no Na wa. was also submitted for an Academy Award nomination at the 89th Oscars, but did not make the final 5 nominations.

Only one Japanese film won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, 2002’s Spirited Away from Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro) and Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro).
