Japanese multimedia corporation Toho has announced that Natsu Hyuuga and Megumi Matsuda’s Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) is being adapted into a TV anime that will premiere this year. The official website has opened, revealing the first teaser visual, promotional video, cast, and staff.

The site has announced that Aoi Yuuki (Madoka Kaname in Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica) will star in the series as Maomao.

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) is a mystery drama light novel series written by Natsu Hyuuga with illustrations from Megumi Matsuda. The series originally began as an online web novel published by Hyuuga on Shousetsuka ni Narou in October 2011. The series was adapted into a light novel series in September 2012, published by Shufunotomo under their Ray Books imprint. To date, a total of 13 volumes have been published. The series received a manga adaptation and a spin-off manga in 2017, with 11 and 16 volumes published respectively.
Here is the series synopsis from MAL:
In an imperial court in ancient China, it has been a few months since a 17-year-old girl known as Maomao was kidnapped and forced to work as a low-level servant at the emperor’s palace. Still, she manages to retain her curious and pragmatic spirit, planning to work until her years of servitude are over. One day, however, she catches wind of the fact that the emperor’s two infants have fallen gravely ill. She decides to secretly take action, drawing on her experience as a pharmacist raised in the poor red-light district.
Despite Maomao’s attempts to remain anonymous, she soon catches the eye of Jinshi, an influential eunuch who recognizes her talents. Maomao soon finds herself in the emperor’s inner court, where she gradually makes a name for herself by utilizing her knowledge and eccentric personality to solve various medical mysteries.
A 2023 TV anime adaptation has been announced for Kusuriya no Hitorigoto.
