Tokyo Ghoul Anime Season 3 Announced for 2018 – Adapting Tokyo Ghoul:re

The official website of the anime adaptation of Sui Ishida’s Tokyo Ghoul manga has announced a third season of the TV anime that will be adapting the sequel manga, Tokyo Ghoul:re. The third season of the anime is set to premiere in 2018.

The announcement has also confirmed that Natsuki Hanae (Inaho Kaizuka from Aldnoah.Zero) will return to voice Ken Kaneki.

The Tokyo Ghoul:re manga is set after the events of the original manga. The anime’s second season, Tokyo Ghoul √A, did not follow through the entirety of the original manga. The new season is set to take place after the events of season 2.

Funimation CEO Gen Fukunaga previously revealed that a third season of the anime was in production and scheduled for a 2016 release to coincide with the release of the series’ mobile phone game. It is unknown if the announcement was premature or false.

Tokyo Ghoul is a manga written and illustrated by Sui Ishida. The series began in 2011 and ended in October for a total of 143 chapters. The manga was published in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump magazine and a total of 14 compiled volumes have been published. A sequel manga was launched in 2014 as Tokyo Ghoul:re that is also being published under Weekly Young Jump and has a total of 14 compiled volumes to date. A prequel online manga titled Tokyo Ghoul: JACK by Ishida started in August 2015 on Shueisha’s Jump Live. An anime adaptation of the series began earlier this Summer. The anime is produced by Studio Pierrot (Naruto ShippudenBleach) and directed by Shuhei Morita (KakurenboFreedom) for total of 12 episodes. A second season of the anime, titled Tokyo Ghoul √A was produced for the Winter 2014/2015 anime season. The season was followed up with two OVAs: Tokyo Ghoul: PINTO and Tokyo Ghoul: JACK.

The suspense horror/dark fantasy story is set in Tokyo, which is haunted by mysterious “ghouls” who are devouring humans. People are gripped by the fear of these ghouls whose identities are masked in mystery. An ordinary college student named Kaneki encounters Rize, a girl who is an avid reader like him, at the café he frequents. Little does he realize that his fate will change overnight.
